Hi! My name is Matthew, and I help build the Internet.

I have a strong affection (it's love, who am I kidding?) for all things marketing and online communications: the Internet, design, social media, and web development.

I currently hold a lead position at Harbourfront Centre, a non-profit performing arts organization mandated to provide the city of Toronto with contemporary Arts and Culture. Working in the Arts, and exploring new ways that our organization can expand its reach through online communities, has provided me with the opportunity to use my skills in an industry I am committed to serving and being passionate about.

By far, my most rewarding experience was co-founding StikiPad, an online wiki provider. From idea to final product, I worked insanely hard on something that I was insanely passionate about. I wore many hats (and mostly all at the same time) to provide our current and potential customers with knowledge of our product, our brand, and our overall philosophy. It was this exercise in determination, perseverance, and true passion for a job well done, that I will always take with me as I build my career.

Skills & Applications

  • I use HTML, CSS, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and numerous other applications related to web design and development on a daily basis. I code XHTML and CSS by hand and strive to keep my code clean and standards compliant.
  • Compatibility Testing - I am well-versed in making sure sites look the same with any browser and comply with web coding standards. I have had to test both static and dynamic websites using an assortment of OS and browser configurations.
  • Windows and Mac Compatible - I've worked on Windows since Windows 95 was released and have kept up through to Windows XP. Recently I've discovered a love for the Macintosh, and have been enthralled ever since. I'm learning more and more about OS X on a daily basis.
  • Flash, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, Apache, UNIX command line, and many other tools - simply too many to mention!
  • Microsoft Office - Strong knowledge of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • FileMaker Pro - I helped administer various databases as well as design entry forms, and am confident in using the software.

Hobbies & Interests

  • Social Media - Having co-founded a "Web 2.0" company, I've been deeply involved in social media for a long, long time (back before it was even cool) as a way to help leverage brands and respond to the needs of potential customers.
  • Photography - I love taking photos and am constantly trying to improve my skills as an amateur photographer.
  • Music - I played trumpet in two concert bands, a jazz band, and many pit orchestras for musicals. I miss regularly playing my piano, but I like to dabble with any instruments I can get my hands on.
  • Computers and Technology - All things computer and technology related, including brand new gadgets and things that promise to make my life easier.
  • HBO - I don't get to watch much TV, but when I do I find any HBO show far too compelling. Compelling enough, in fact, that I feel good labeling it as a "hobby."

I can give both personal and professional references upon request, but for the record, my mom thinks I'm a catch and that should be considered accordingly.
